USMARC Concise Bibliographic: Classification and Call Number Fields (05X-08X)



Fields 050-088 fields contain classification and call numbers related to the item described in the bibliographic record. Identification of the character sets used in encoding the bibliographic data is also provided for by a field in this group.

050 - LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CALL NUMBER (R)


A classification or call number that is taken from Library of Congress Classification or LC Classification Additions and Changes. The brackets that customarily surround alternate class/call numbers are not carried in the USMARC record; they may be generated based on the presence of repeated $a subfields.

A classification or call number that is taken from National Library of Medicine Classification schedules QS-QZ and W or from Library of Congress Classification schedules as used by NLM for peripheral and related topics. The legend DNLM: and the arabic number that precede an NLM call number, and the brackets that surround the entire statement are not carried in the USMARC record. They may be generated based on the field tag. The space-slash-space that separates alternate NLM call numbers is not carried in the USMARC record; it may be generated based on the presence of repeated $a subfields.
